Robert Dahlgren has taken the lead of the 2019 TCR Scandinavia Touring Car Championship after a victory and a fifth place at Anderstorp, and now leads a tight championship, with just four points separating the top four drivers.

After taking pole position on Saturday, the PWR Racing – SEAT Dealer Team driver converted pole into what looked like an easy race victory, pulling away from the two Brink Motorsport Audis of Andreas Wernersson and Tobias Brink, crossing the line a little over 6.5 seconds clear.

Behind the Audis was Mattias Andersson, with the veteran Swede having a safe run to fourth in his Honda Racing Sweden Civic TCR, while behind him was Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky, who was fighting in her PWR Racing Cupra to hold back a frustrated Andreas Ahlberg, who was unable to make the most of the pace of his Micke Kågered Racing Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR.

Ahlberg would have that opportunity in Race 2, when he had a lightning start from third on the grid to pass his team-mate Tomas Engström into second at the first corner, before taking advantage of an error by the pole-sitter Jessica Bäckman to take the lead at the next series of corners.

From there, Ahlberg controlled the gap to Tobias Brink, who’d followed him through into second in his Audi, and went on to take a career-high victory for both himself and the Micke Kågered Racing team.

Jessica Bäckman finished third, securing her best result in Sweden, and a podium for Hyundai and Target Competition on their Scandinavian debut, while Tomas Engström finished fourth, with Robert Dahlgren’s fifth place ensuring the 2017 champion goes to his home circuit of Skellefteå with the lead of the championship.

Robert Dahlgren, #2 PWR Racing – SEAT Dealer Team Cupra TCR, Race 1 winner and championship leader, said:

“It’s looking really tight for the championship. Race 1 was just perfect, taking the win from pole position.

“In Race 2, in the fight with Mattias (Andersson) – we had the speed in terms of lap times, but we were quick in the wrong places.
“We had done a few things to try and improve our speed, but they’re definitely quicker than us in the straights. If you can draw a map of where you’d want to be fastest on the circuit, Mattias has that map, it’s spot on.

“My only chance was his tyres going off – which allowed us to get past him, but by then there was way too much of a gap to everyone else.”

Andreas Ahlberg, #21 Micke Kågered Racing Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR, Race 2 winner, said:
“It’s fantastic. I knew it was important to make a good start. I managed to get 100% off the line, and then I saw Jessica (Bäckman) got a bit of oversteer in the first corner and then she lost it a bit in the third corner, and I just passed her and after that it was just go flat out and get my head down.

“Those last six laps were the longest I’d ever driven, listening for every noise.

“In terms of the championship, we’re just aiming to keep focussed and get points every weekend. Qualifying yesterday was a shame, but we bounced back today, didn’t do anything crazy in the first race and kept it together. We have to be smart, as we sometimes don’t have the raw pace like PWR.”
